TWENTY-ONE

SADIE

I offered to drive myself wherever we were going, but Terrell said, “I’d rather talk to you on the way.”

The sweet, genuine way he said it made butterflies dance in my stomach.

He opened the door for me again, and even though I didn’t need him to do it or think it was necessary to be a nice guy, it felt good to have someone looking out for me, trying to make my life easier, better, even in a simple way like opening a car door.

He glanced my way. “What kind of music do you like?”

“I don’t listen to music,” I admitted.

His eyebrows drew together. “What? How do you not listen to music?”

I laughed. “I would rather listen to an audiobook or watch a TV show if I have time for headphones. I mean, I listen to the music in restaurants, I guess.”

He let out a groan as he leaned his head back against the seat and rocked it side to side in disbelief. Like I’d just told him I secretly thought water polo was a superior sport to basketball. “We’re changing this,” he declared.

“What?” I asked, turning his way. “Why?”

“Because music is life! There’s a song for every mood, every feeling. It can make you feel inspired, sad, motivated, happy... You can’t live life without that.”

I couldn’t help smiling at his emphasis on the words. “If you say so.”

He let out a groan. “If I say so. Ma’am. I say so.”

“Did you just call me ma’am?” I laughed.

“If the tone-deaf shoe fits,” he teased.

I shook my head at him, then noticed we were slowing down in front of a run-down building on a gravel lot. The only bright colors were the window paints advertising a coffee and donut special for $4.99. “What is this place?”

His grin made my stomach flip-flop. “You are quite literally in for a treat.”

If he knew how much he affected me, he didn’t show it. Instead, he got out of the car and waited for me while I came to meet him on the cracked sidewalk. We moved side by side, our shoulders brushing, to the front door, which he held open for me.

There were a few people in line ahead of us, but as soon as we reached the counter, the older blond woman came around the counter and said, “Terrell, it’s great to see you!” She hugged him like a mother might while he grinned and hugged her back.

“Good to see you too,” he replied warmly.

“And who is this lovely girl?” The woman eyed me. “You are a stunner. With that hair and those eyes?”

My cheeks were already heating when Terrell said, “This is someone special. Sadie.”

I tried not to grin ear to ear like the giddy, lovestruck schoolgirl I was. If I was an anime character, I would definitely have heart bubbles over my head.

The woman grinned at me. “I’m Gayle. Should I call you ‘Sadie’ or ‘Someone Special’?”

A happy chuckle fell past my lips. I felt at ease with her in a way I didn’t with most new people.
